Arsenal closed out 2025 with a statement of intent on Tuesday night, dismantling Aston Villa 4-1 at the Emirates Stadium to extend their lead at the top of the Premier League. The victory not only snapped Villa’s club-record 11-match winning streak but also moved Mikel Arteta’s side five points clear of their nearest rivals, Manchester City.
The first half was a cagey affair, with Villa looking dangerous on the counter-attack. Ollie Watkins, celebrating his 30th birthday, missed a golden opportunity to put the visitors ahead, firing wide after being played through by Youri Tielemans. Arsenal struggled to find their rhythm early on, missing the presence of Declan Rice in the midfield engine room.
However, the game shifted dramatically just three minutes after the restart. Gabriel Magalhães, returning from a hamstring injury, outmuscled Emi Martínez to head home a Bukayo Saka corner. The goal acted as a catalyst; four minutes later, Martin Ødegaard carved open the Villa defense with a pinpoint through-ball for Martin Zubimendi, who coolly slotted home his first goal since September.
Leandro Trossard added a third with a stinging strike from the edge of the area in the 69th minute, before substitute Gabriel Jesus put the game beyond doubt with a curling effort ten minutes later. Watkins eventually found the net for a stoppage-time consolation, but the damage was long since done. Villa ends the year in third place, six points adrift of the Gunners.
At Old Trafford, Manchester United’s pursuit of the top four suffered a setback as they were held to a 1-1 draw by a struggling Wolverhampton Wanderers side. Despite dominated possession, Ruben Amorim’s men lacked the clinical edge required to dispatch a team that entered the match on a 12-game losing streak.
Joshua Zirkzee opened the scoring for United in the 27th minute, benefiting from a heavy deflection off Ladislav Krejci that wrong-footed Jose Sa. The lead seemed secure until the stroke of half-time, when Krejci redeemed himself by ghosting in at the back post to power a header past Senne Lammens from a corner.
United thought they had snatched a dramatic winner in the 90th minute when Patrick Dorgu fired home a rebound, but a lengthy VAR check ruled the goal out for offside. The result leaves United in sixth place, while Wolves celebrate just their third point of a grueling season.
Chelsea also missed an opportunity to climb the table, playing out an erratic 2-2 draw against Bournemouth at Stamford Bridge. All four goals arrived in a frenetic opening 27 minutes, starting with David Brooks poking home from a long throw-in to stun the home crowd.
Cole Palmer equalized from the penalty spot after Estevão Willian was fouled, and Enzo Fernández briefly put the Blues ahead with a magnificent strike into the top corner. However, Chelsea’s defensive frailties against set-pieces were exposed again when Justin Kluivert turned in another long-throw delivery at the back post.
The draw leaves Enzo Maresca’s side in fifth place, level on points with Manchester United as they enter 2026.
