A Gaza-based company responsible for water desalination services to nearly half of the enclave’s population has resumed operations after an employee who had been detained by Hamas-led security agents was freed. The suspension of services had impacted over one million residents in the territory.
The Abdul Salam Yassin Company, which operates critical water desalination plants in Gaza, issued a statement confirming the resumption of its services. The company stated that the decision was made after the issue was “resolved” and confirmed that the detained staff member is “fine and in good health.”
The company’s services had been halted following the staff member’s detention by security agents led by the Hamas-run government on Monday. The company’s desalination plants provide essential water access to more than one million people across the territory.
In its statement, the Abdul Salam Yassin Company apologized for what it termed a “misunderstanding” that led to the employee’s detention. The company further affirmed its “respect for the Hamas-led government in Gaza.”
Hamas government officials declined to comment on the arrest or the reasons behind the employee’s detention. However, an anonymous source confirmed that the staff member had been freed, without providing any further details regarding the incident.
The incident occurs as the Islamist terror group has been gradually reasserting control in areas of Gaza from which Israeli forces have withdrawn. This reassertion follows the October 10 ceasefire deal and takes place amid ongoing, difficult talks concerning the future administration of the war-devastated territory. The security implications of Hamas’s continued control remain a significant challenge to the long-term stability and governance of the enclave.
