Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab has briefed local industrialists on a pioneering project to treat and recycle sewage water for industrial use, aiming to create a reliable and sustainable water supply for the city’s manufacturing heartlands. The mayor and a delegation of industry leaders visited the SITE Limited Sewerage Treatment Plant on Wednesday, along with the Chief Executive Officer of the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC), Ahmed Ali Siddiqui.
The KWSC chief provided a detailed technical briefing on the current status and capacity of the treatment plants to the attendees. Mayor Wahab emphasized that this initiative marks a historic first for the metropolis.
“For the first time in Karachi’s history, a formal process of treating wastewater and recycling it for industrial purposes is being initiated,” Wahab stated. The ultimate goal is to provide industries with a reliable, sustainable, and uninterrupted water supply.
Significant progress has been made across Karachi’s key treatment facilities. The TP-III plant in Mauripur has been reactivated after an extended period of inactivity. Additionally, the TP-I treatment plant in Haroonabad has undergone comprehensive cleaning and rehabilitation after 25 years. Construction at the second TP-I plant, located behind the SITE Industrial Area, is reportedly moving forward rapidly.
A major objective of this initiative is to prevent untreated wastewater from polluting the Arabian Sea, thereby safeguarding marine life and the wider environment. The project’s planning and execution adhere strictly to international standards and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Karachi’s industries require approximately 150 MGD of water daily. Mayor Wahab expressed hope that the overall project will eventually help meet this entire industrial demand. If the recycled water system proves successful, he projected that Karachi could earn the distinction of establishing Pakistan’s first “Industrial Water Park.”
The mayor assured the industrialists that the PPP government is taking “serious and result-oriented measures” to ensure a sustainable, safe, and quality-controlled water supply for the city’s industrial base. He concluded by underscoring the vital role this project will play in fostering Karachi’s industrial growth and long-term economic stability.
